Florence – Uffizi and the Academy
Everyone says that the biggest two sites to see in Florence are the Academy and the Uffizi. We made reservations in advance, as the lines can get really long. Honestly, I was a little apprehensive about going to more museums (and paying a lot for them) but I ended up enjoying both. The Uffizi (pictured) was overall more fun as Rick Steves audio tour was more interesting and there was a lot more to see, but Michelangelo’s David was awesome. It was cool to see it up close and see all the details in his face and arms and learn about the symbolism throughout the sculpture. I think art museums can be really boring if you don’t know the story behind the art, which thankfully we got. I included a picture of us after all the museums - tired.
We finished our museums around 4:00 pm and then spent the rest of our evening shopping, eating, and talking to people. Em, Mike, and Tiffany all found some pretty good deals on clothes. Of course we finished the night with more gelato (haven’t missed a day yet) and went to one recommended by Rick Steves – it was organic and made fresh daily. It was really good – we found it funny that in the ‘Experiences ‘section in the Rick Steves book – Gelato is there. There was another couple with two young kids there from the states that we visited with for a while. They are in Florence for a couple weeks and said they go to this place twice a day and said it was the best gelato in Italy – they may have been right.
Overall Florence has been a blast. It definitely had the most history of any of the places we had been to and it feels cool to have seen the famous artwork that we saw. It was busy and touristy (which we don’t like as much) but our hotel was great and there was so much to see and do that it was well worth it.
Here is a picture of us on our way to Rome. The trains have been pretty nice overall.
